I taught a few people how to crochet up here and they watched me crochet both monster blankets and were fascinated by the waffle stitch, I have to admit, it’s pretty great. It took me quite a while to learn it because I couldn’t find a really good tutorial. So since a couple friends who are moving away or are already gone wanted to make waffle stitch blankets I thought I’d make a tutorial on here for them to follow!
This is the best blanket ever.
Monster blanket, the original.
Paisley giving me the stink eye on the monster blanket 2.0!
I’ve never made a tutorial so sit tight, this might suck.
here we go!
Materials:
worsted weight yarn (I used Red Heart Super Saver for the rainbow blanket and Red Heart Comfort for the monster blanket the original) they’re pretty much identical yarns.
5.00mm/H crochet hook, hook size doesn’t really matter all that much, I think I made one with a 5.00mm/H and a 5.50mm/I
yarn needle for weaving in ends
scissors
patience.
Abbreviations:
ch = chain
DC = double crochet
FPDC = front post double crochet
st = stitch
Pattern (without pictures):
create a slip knot
ch until the blanket is as wide as you want (the original monster was 220 ch wide (75″) and the rainbow one was 172 ch wide) [in these pictures I just ch 25 just to make it easier for the tutorial] If you’re making a blanket or bedspread err on the side of caution and make it a few extra ch wide.
Row 1: DC into 4th ch from hook and into every ch across. at the end ch 3 and turn.
Row 2 (the first row of waffling): FPDC around second stitch in the row (the 3 skipped ch from the start don’t count as a DC here) FPDC around next st. DC into top of next st. Repeat the “2 FPDC, 1 DC into top” pattern until the end of the row. When you get to the end, continue the pattern until you have worked all DCs and just have the ch 3 from the previous row left, on every row you will dc into the space (around the st) this is easier explained with pictures.
Row 3: DC into 4th st from hook (top of first DC), DC into top of next stitch, FPDC around next stitch. Repeat “2 DC in top, 1 FPDC” until end of row. make sure you DC in the space of the ch3 from the previous row.
Row 4-end: repeats rows 2 and 3 until your blanket is a satisfying length!

this isn’t the greatest picture but it’s the best I could get to show the “popping out” of the stitches… for the rest of the blanket if there’s a stitch popping out you do a FPDC around this stitch, if it’s kind of hiding in the back, you work into the top of that stitch. The rows will alternate 2 FPDC, 1 DC in top, then 2 DC in top, 1 FPDC.
Hopefully those pictures clear it up a little.
So, there’s my first tutorial.. I wonder if anyone will actually be able to learn from it! Comment if you’ve got any questions!
Hugs & Kisses from afar

Laura!!
Awesome tutorial, you make this so much easier. I’ve always loved this stitch and haven’t tried it yet. I can’t wait to start making a blanket with this stitch. Thank you.
Im making it now!! Your tutorial was great! Im by far a great crocheter..but your pictures and instructions made this easy! It took a few rows before I could see my pattern..but its working! Thank you:)
I’m about halfway through a waffle-stitched afgan and my husband saw that I missed a stitch 40 rows back. I really don’t want to frog back that far! Is there any way to fix it? Thank you for your help!
Unfortunately I don’t know of a way to fix it. I’ve missed a few and just continued on and lived with it haha
Love through look of waffle stitch. I do 2 doubles on top and 2 double front posts. I’ve also made with triples, grows a bit faster
hi I am doing a baby blanket with this FUN pattern I will end this with a row of double crochets on
the very last row, and the do a couple of rows of double crochets around the entire afghan for a
boarder. thanks again!
Hey I tried it but iam not getting perfect waffle pattern the popping up stitch is not at equally placed in all rows .. it’s one stitch forward in each rows which is not giving a perfect shape. I don’t know where iam committing mistake.
It sounds like it might be a mistake with how you’re starting/finishing rows. Pay extra close attention to the start and end and see if that helps
Hi had a couple of practices and have finally cracked it getting on well with a baby blanket thank you for the tutorial xxx
How many skeins did you need for the monster blanket?
I AM TRYING TO MAKE A DISHCLOTH FROM YOUR PATTERN HOPE IT TURN OUT
I had started an afghan with this stitch and it looked ok until I went to change color, thanks to your photos, I realized I needed to be beginning a row 2 to change color well…. THANK you……ALSO,I WOULD AMEND DIRECTIONS TO CHAIN IN MULTIPLES OF 3 PLUS 4 FOR STARTING CH.
Can you make this so it’s printer friendly? I would love to make some for my grandchildren.
highlight the written pattern above the pictures then hit print..
U did a wonderful job on this tutorial. I understand it completely. 😊
You did a very good job. I too had a hard time finding a tutorial I could understand.
I do however, have question about row 3- ” D.C. In 4th st from hook”. Where did the 4 ch come from
Thank you
MaryAnn
The chains at the end of the previous row
what is stitch count of foundation ….
can’t get it to work!!!!!
220 ch for monster and 172 for rainbow smaller one
It would be nice if we knew how many skeins of yarn are required for the original AND the monster size. I see someone had asked a few months ago but there has been no reply. Anyone??
I don’t remember =S. for the blue one it was either 5 or 6 of the red heart comfort balls (they’re about 900y each) and the multicoloured one was one ball of each colour and a few red heart comfort balls in white.
I have been wanting to learn this stitch and you made it very simple.. Thank you!!
Thank you for the excellent tutorial. I have started my own waffle stitch blanket 😊
How many balls of wool did you need? Love the colors you used

Are there written instructions for the pattern or stitch?
What is the beginning row ( how many chains). Thank you.
It’s written in this blog post. Both with pictures and without.
This is my all time FAVORITE stitch!!! made lotsa dishclothes and one baby blanket…so nice and thick and cozy…
I saw a picture of a waffle stitch afghan and wanted to make one for my MIL. I looked for a tutorial and found yours. All I did was read it and it is so easy to understand that I already have it memorized – without picking up a hook and yarn.
Fell in love with this pattern. Only tricky part was the start and end of rows. Once I got that down it went quickly. My Mom and Husband also fell in love with this pattern. Finished a beautiful baby blanket and about to start a red, white, and blue one for my Mom. Thanks!
I really love your tutorial. This has become my favorite stitch to make afghans with. My problem is I can never find a pattern that tells the amount of yarn used. Can you PLEASE tell us how much yarn you used for the monster blanket. Thanks
I never bought a specific amount of yarn so I didn’t really keep track. I THINK I used something like 5 balls of red heart comfort yarn but I really don’t remember I just kept stitching Til I ran out then I’d go buy another ball
Is there (I am not sure what you call it) certain amount of chains ie: multiples of (10) +3?
I believe it’s mutiples of 3 + 3 🙂
Would be nice to have a print out option, and be able to refer back to your instructions. Everyone does this and it is very discouraging. When they don’t provide a print option without pictures I do not visit their sight again. No use I cant take the computer everywhere I go.
You could copy & paste the instructions into a word document and print it out …
Thank you for your tutorial on this stitch. I thought your presentation was excellent. I have no doubts on this stitch anymore!
How do you make a fpdc stitch
It’s shown in the pictures. You yarn over, and insert the hook behind the DC of the previous row and continue with the steps of a regular DC.
Thank You, I have seen lots of blankets made with this stitch and always wondered how to do it. Great instructions and saved, as soon as I finish my latest road trip scarf and I am going to have a go at making a sofa throw with all the balls of yarn I have.
Making this now and your tutorial is the best I’ve found. I’ve never done the waffle stitch and I am self taught but i am on the third row and have it down!! Thanks so much!!
