Lights January 28th 2014

The lights were nice for like 5 minutes today and I was super lazy and just took pictures from my front porch. Here’s a few! IMG_1184 IMG_1186 IMG_1188 IMG_1189 IMG_1191 IMG_1194 IMG_1195

Next time they’re out I won’t be so lazy. But for now, I sleep.

night all!

Northern Lights January 20th 2014

The only upside to 1:00am medevacs is that if the northern lights are out, that’s the time they’re the brightest/most active. So last night I had a medevac around 1:00 and the lights were amazing. They’re usually the best between midnight and 2am. So unfortunately I just caught the tail end of them when they were winding down. But I got a few good shots! … still figuring out my camera, and the autofocus is broken as all hell so some are kind of blurry. Gotta take my camera in next time I’m down south and get’r fixed!

Enjoy!

IMG_1174 IMG_1175   IMG_1176 moon with a tiny hint of northern lights around it, it’s super rare to see both at the same time since the light of the moon usually cancels out the lights.

IMG_1177  oops I shook the tripod… nevermind the town lights lol

The Frozen Pipes Debacle of 2014

Staying in a hotel: someone makes your bed, takes out your garbage, cleans your bathroom… amazing. Living in a hotel (in your own town)… gets old fast. The first few days were fun, like a little vacation, now I just want to be back in my own house and most of all, my own bed. So why am I living in a hotel you ask? WELL the water pipes at my house have been frozen for over a week now which means no showers, no flushing toilets, no laundry, no dishes, no washing your hands! I didn’t realize how much I LOVED having running water til it was ripped away from me by vicious old man winter haha, arctic problems. So my super awesome boss put me up in the Nova Inn here in town while the pipes are being thawed out, with over 400′ of pipes frozen, it’s taking a while, also… labour-wise nothing gets done quickly in Inuvik. So I’m patiently waiting in my hotel room (complete with fireplace and satellite TV, yay!) for my house to return to a liveable state. I took a few pictures of my hotel room to show you all what a hotel looks like in the arctic!! … it looks just like a hotel down south.Bam.IMG_0948 IMG_0949 IMG_0950 IMG_0951  not so thrilled to still be in a hotelIMG_0952 IMG_0953

Back to sitting by the fire I go!!

Inuvik Sunrise Festival 2014

Every January there’s a full weekend of activities to celebrate the return of the sun! The sun poked its head over the horizon for just a few minutes for the first time on January 5th. So the festival is hosted the weekend following the first sunrise. From Friday evening to Sunday afternoon there’s always something going on! On Friday evening there was a performance by the Inuvik Drummers & Dancers, I’ve seen them quite a few times and I still find them so entertaining! I’ll try and upload some videos to YouTube and attach the links here. This afternoon there was a snowmobile parade, snow carvers and activities for kids in Jim Koe Park right in the middle of town. I took a few pictures before my lululemon-clad legs got too cold. I’ll definitely be wearing layers upon layers for the fireworks and bonfire tonight! Stay tuned!
